 BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION STATUS OF HILL STREAM ICHTHYOFAUNA IN SELECTED STREAMS OF  ARAVALLI REGION BELONGING TO SOUTH RAJASTHAN (INDIA)

Abstract: The present study deals with the diversity and abundance of hill stream fishes in selected streams of Aravalli region, Rajasthan during 2015-16. The results of present investigation reveal the occurrence of 32 fish species belonging to 10 families and 22 genera. Among the collected species, family Cyprinidae was most dominant constituting 53.12% followed by family Bagridae and Channidae constituting 9.37% each, family Balitoridae and Siluridae constituting 6.25% each, family Notopteridae, Saccobranchidae, Centropomidae, Belonidae and Mastacembelidae were represented by 3.12% each of the total fish species. The conservation status of these fishes was assessed according to IUCN criteria. The Major threats faced by the freshwater fishes are mostly in the form of human interventions and aquatic pollution.

Abstract: The present study deals with the diversity and abundance of hillstream fishes in selected streams of Hadoti region, Rajasthan during 2015-16. The results of present investigation reveal the occurrence of 31 fish species belonging to 10 families and 22 genera. Among the collected species, family Cyprinidae was most dominant constituting 51.61% followed by family Bagridae constituting 12.90 ,Channidae constituting 9.67 %, family Siluridae constituting 6.45%, family Balitoridae  Notopteridae, Saccobranchidae, Centropomidae, Belonidae and Mastacembelidae were represented by 3.22% each of the total fish species. The Major threats faced by the freshwater fishes are baleful fishing methods and aquatic pollution.
